FINIBIO

In the decarbonization era, raw materials and processes are changing, fossil fuels are being replaced by renewable energy sources and recycled materials integrate and partially replace extraction of new materials. Finikem has developed FINIBIO, A line of natural compounds-based products, with raw materials not deriving from Petroleum.

“Biobased” which means “derived from biomass”, for example plants or animals. It is a term that defines the origin of the material and does not imply that it must also be biodegradable, compostable, etc.

In the chemical industry, renewable sources and raw materials can have vegetable origin (oils, vegetable waste, wood, vegetable tissues) and / or from animal waste and microorganisms.

In the tanning industry and leather chemical finishing, there is, very often, the concomitance of both vegetable derivatives or animal products (oils, waxes, proteins) and synthetic ingredients deriving from petroleum (synthetic acrylic polymers or polyurethane).

Internationally standardized methods are used to evaluate the origin of the chemicals applicated and allow to understand if materials are truly “biobased” by the carbon analysis. It is carbon, which allows to distinguish a “biobased” from a fossil origin material. The “biobased” content of a product corresponds on the carbon percentage derived from biomass on the total of carbon in the analyzed product.

In the new FINIBIO line you can find a variety of different nature of polyurethanes with percentages of renewable raw materials, which can satisfy all the current requests for sustainable leather items.
